Making Money in Way of the Hunter 2: Missions and Hippo Hunts

At a glance

With little cash, start with unlocked missions and animals your current equipment can handle. A hippo route becomes an option once you have Kilimaya access and suitable big-game gear.

Start with the equipment you own

Complete available missions and sell ordinary harvests rather than buying an expensive setup solely to earn money. Two mission examples are Pieris Marginalis: 1,050 cash and Erynnis Lucilius: 600 cash. These are rewards for those missions, not repeatable payouts available immediately on a fresh save.

For regular hunts, choose an animal suited to your weapon and ammunition, recover it and select Sell. Taxidermy keeps a trophy instead of providing the same cash route. Shot placement, meat loss and recovery all affect what you earn.

When the hippo route makes sense

With Kilimaya Reserve access and suitable equipment, explore the U-shaped riverbank around Popobawa Vlei for common hippopotamus need zones. A route demonstrated around 07:00 uses .375 H&H Magnum ammunition and four already placed tents to rotate between locations.

Check the ammunition’s animal suitability and the need-zone times in your own game. Four tents are a travel investment, not a prerequisite for simply exploring the river on foot. Hippos can charge, so leave yourself a way out.

Compare costs and returns

Route What you need Trade-off
Unlocked missions Current mission progress and suitable existing gear A defined one-time reward; availability depends on progress
Ordinary hunting A compatible loadout and a recoverable target Low extra setup cost; sale value varies
Hippo rotation Kilimaya, big-game equipment and travel setup Potentially valuable harvests, with attack, tracking and setup costs

A community equipment sheet lists the Safari Elite .375 at 4,150 and a tent at 950: 5,100 for the rifle plus one tent, or 7,950 with four tents. Treat this as a budgeting example and check actual prices and unlocks in your Shop before spending. Already owned equipment should not be purchased again to copy a route.

Two demonstrated hippo sale quotes were 314 and 491. They are individual quotes, not a fixed animal price, net profit calculation or hourly income. No route here carries a universal “fastest” income claim.

Sell unused equipment in 1.2

Patch 1.2 lets you sell purchased items from Storage for 50% of the original price. Use that to recover part of an unwanted purchase; buying and reselling the same item loses money.
